Lewis Hamilton (a British Formula 1 racing driver from England) and Nico Rosberg (a German racing driver for the Mercedes Formula 1 team as well) mended ties during the team's world championship party. Hamilton, victor of the race, applauded Rosberg after he took third in the race. At the celebration Hamilton spoke about how the two had been best friends since they were four and announced how good of a teammate he is to have handled such a loss appropriately. He also states that he will continue to try and beat him in the races that will occur in the future. Rosberg emphasized how upset he was with himself, yet once he attended the celebration and saw how happy his colleagues were, he began to appreciate all that the team has accomplished.
How could having such a competitive mind set be detrimental to a business like this ? In sports today, do you think that it is vital to maintain a certain atmosphere in order for success? Do you think having such a close knit relationship with a teammate serves the team/business a benefit or a drawback ?

I think that is a great gesture by Hamilton - one that professional sports can use more of. I think some of the players that are revered the most are the ones who combine exceptional talent with great humility. Lionel Messi and Stephen Curry are two examples of athletes who represent the best of sports. Also, on the subject of if it is necessary to maintain a certain atmosphere in order for success I believe the answer is yes. Sports teams need to maintain an atmosphere of competitiveness because if they aren't competitive, what are they striving for?
ReplyDeleteI think that personal relationships, and treating others with respect comes before everything, even such a competitive sport. Hamilton and Rosberg are a great example of this loyalty. They have been friends since they were 4 years old, which is obviously a longer time they will be involved with Formula 1. It is important to keep personal relationships and competitiveness separate, in a way, when it come to beating or losing to your best friend. I think sports teams are more successful when they have good teammate relationships and are able to work together. As we've talked about in class, sport is all about emotion, which is also what forms and strengthens friendships and teammates.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely with your statement. Being so committed and emotional to a sport can cause tensions to rise, but in the end it's that same love for the sport that can bring people together
DeleteI think this is a great example of how teams, in this case Mercedes Racing, can better themselves through internal competition. By having two top racers competing on the same team they will only make each other better. And from Mercedes point of view, things will only get better. -Rafael
ReplyDeleteI agree with your statement as well. I think that having a little competition can push the racers to step out of their boundaries and improve on the track.
