Wayne Rooney to Adidas

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/manchester-united-striker-wayne-rooney-6746211

Wayne Rooney, Manchester United's most precious gem, is paid over $1.5 million per year to wear Nike cleats every time he plays. United just made a huge move from Nike gear to Adidas within the past year. It appears that Adidas is going after the Red Devil's best player as well. Rooney may be getting older, but he still maintains massive commercial value. My only question for Adidas is why they would go after Rooney since he has been endorsed by Nike for almost his entire career? Especially since he hasn't been playing as well and might retire within the next 5 years. What do you think?

  1. Although Adidas is going after Wayne Rooney, its highly doubtful he will actually switch considering his loyalty to Nike for his entire career and how much he already makes with them. However, it makes sense for Adidas because Rooney is still one of the most popular football players in the world, and being from England that only increases his commercial appeal. But I would not count on the switch actually occurring.

  2. This is an interesting topic. To begin, it's important to note that Rooney is an English icon, a superhero of sorts. When I first arrived in Barcelona I saw adverts all over the train stations of footballs wearing the latest Nike cleat, I thought it was awesome. I can only image the strength Adidas will gain by having the face of Rooney on their posters across the world. That aside, if you decide to go to the Adidas store instead of the Nike store to buy the latest boot, your bound to buy their latest socks and accessories to match. Hopefully this investment pays off for Adidas.-Rafael
